Geographical position

The Yelsk region is situated in the south-west of Gomel oblast on the territory of the Mozyr Polesie. The total area of the region makes 1,36 thousand square kilometers (136,611 hectares), or about 3.5 per cent of the total area of Gomel oblast.

The region borders on Ukraine in the south, on the Mozyr region - in the north, on the Lelchitsy region - in the west and on the Narovlya region - in the east. The town of Yelsk, an administrative and cultural center of the region, is located some 367 km away from Minsk and 170 km from Gomel.
